Paul Rogers About Ecol DataPaul Rogers established Ecol Data in 1982 as a part-time
business while he was employed by the Australian Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Ecol Data was one of the first private businesses in
Queensland to offer online electronic document searching
of the worldwide literature, essentially in the biomedical
sciences, using intermediaries such as DIALOG and STN. Modem and communication speed was a limiting factor and Internet speeds are now thousands of times faster. What does Ecol Data do?Short history This lead to a current awareness service published as a bimonthly newsletter: TOXIC: Chemical, Radiation and Environmental Safety, which published short reviews with analytical comment, and longer feature articles. This was the leading publication of its type. In 1995, the newsletter was on sold as Hazardous Substances Review. The specialist newsletter had subscribers across local, state and federal government, mining, manufacturing and food industries, legal practice, consulting engineering and health and environmental professional practices and the medical community to name a few. Additional consulting work was performed for several clients, including major projects such as the federal National Pollutant Inventory.
Now, as then, Ecol Data retrieves, compiles, reviews and publishes current awareness information and performs in-depth reviews and documentation. Nutrition and Fitness sciencesEcol Data now has expertise in the nutrition and fitness sciences. Paul Rogers is a qualified fitness trainer and a member of the Nutrition Society of Australia and specialises in lifestyle preventive health, weight management, food safety and sports nutrition under the name of Fitnesse. This expertise is applied across a broad range of diet, nutrition, food and fitness areas, particularly in relation to lifestyle and health. As well as an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, Ecol Data also knows the nature of evidence-based assessment and how to evaluate research trials and other evidence for relevance, The Internet and BeyondAlthough traditional databases such as Medline and PubMed are still used, Ecol Data is also an internet pioneer, familiarity beginning with the early traditional internet before the beginning of the commercial web in 1993. Since then, services have been extended to web publishing and making sense of the vast quantity of reliable (and unreliable) information on the web -- now with blogs and RSS news feeds and Web 2.0 tools like Twitter and Facebook.
By combining astute internet searching with traditional online methods, Ecol Data can provide a premium research service in the sectors for which we have expertise accumulated over decades. Paul Rogers has appeared on ABC Radio, A Current Affair, Brisbane Extra, 7:30 Report and various other media outlets on a range of health-related subjects.
